Organizing the Chaos

Time is and forever will be my greatest enemy.  As a working single mom I am always in search of ways to save time without having to make compromises.  I have reached the conclusion, organization is my best form of defense against my lack of time.  The more organized I can be, the less time I waste.  So in my free time. . . Ha!. . . free time. . . I hope to share a few of my time saving tips.  Warning: The point is to save time not create crafty masterpieces.  In other words, my creations are more functional than cute.  If you are looking for cute, hop on over to my friend's blog - she's all about cute!

I am in love with scarves these days!  I think they are a perfect and affordable way to dress up just about any outfit.  Since I am usually in a hurry to get ready, I need a fast and simple way to keep my collection organized.  I saw this idea a long time ago, as I am sure many of you have, but it took me forever to actually do it.  Let me just say. . . I am so glad I did.  I went to Wal-Mart and purchased a set of shower curtain hooks for about $2.85 and then I used them to hang my scarves on a hanger at the front of my closet.  Of course I also put similar colors together!  Now go get busy. . .

One of the most annoying tasks to me has always been retrieving and sorting the mail.  The thing I hate about mail is. . . some of it is super important. . . some of it might as well be used as lining in the dog crate.  In order to speed up the process, I designated a basket for mail and inside I keep these folders.  When I get a chance, in between cooking dinner and changing dirty diapers, I open the mail and place each item in the correct folder.  I also keep a trash stack so I can dispose of the junk immediately, instead of letting it pile up.  It would be awesome if I could leave everything in the folders, however there is one more step.  I have a weekly standing date with my folders.  On Sunday evenings, I go through everything.  I complete the tasks just as they are labeled on the folders, I file, I complete the to do items, and I pay the bills.  Sorting through the mail daily and keeping everything in folders keeps my counter free of clutter and gives me the flexibility to do it on my own time. I know this seems like a simple idea, but it has saved me tons of time!

This is one of my all time favorite tricks to organizing small spaces. . . Velveeta Cheese.  While eating the cheese might help you get organized. . . I mean food always solves my problems!  I'm not actually talking about the cheese. . . I'm talking about the box.  It was my Memaw who got me started saving the boxes Velveeta Cheese comes in.  The box is the perfect size to put in a drawer.  I use these all over the place. . . yes, we eat a lot of cheese!  Teachers, they are perfect at school for pens and pencils.  Now go eat some cheese and save your boxes!

If you have ever read my blog then you know I am a "keeper" A.K.A. hoarder.  I am also old-fashioned and I think a lot can be said for a hand written card.  When I do receive a card or an invitation I like to keep it as a memory from the year.  While I love to save these mementos, they can quickly start to pile up.  This year,  I came up with an system for organizing my cards.  The best part is it can be made in less than 5 minutes and only requires two things: a metal ring and a piece of cardstock.  As easy as 1, 2, 3. . . Write a title on the cardstock, hole punch it and add it to the ring. . . As you receive goodies in the mail simply hole punch the cards and add them to the ring.  I have the perfect spot to hang this in my laundry room where I see it each day.  I plan on making a new one every year.
